I’m Back With A Vengence!!

Hi Friends, once again, I have been remiss in getting back to my blog, we had an awesome time in New Zealand, but very busy, catching up with Family and Friends.

Xmas day was huge, we had over 50 people for dinner, but the lovely thing was that the men did some of the cooking as you can  see here,

.Prep The Fire

They peeled potatoes and cooked the meat, we ladies just had to make salads and desserts. We did have a very different Xmas dinner, one of my Brother In Laws is Tongan and he cooked the equivalent of a Maori Hangi called a ‘Umu, where all the meat and vegetables are cooked in an earth oven, and I have to say it was delicious.

I just love to experience different cultures and my Family is very multi-cultural, we have Irish, Lebanese, Maori, Tongan, Macedonian, Bosnian, Dutch, and English roots, so when we get together we have lots of different food to enjoy.

The only problem I had, was sourcing jewellery making supplies. There are lots of bead stores in Auckland, but they didn’t stock much in the way of artist’s wire or precious metal wire, so I had limited stock with me and I had to spread it out and not do too much with wire. I did have some seed beads with me so I took the time to teach myself some bead weaving techniques, like peyote stitch as you can see here:-seed Beading

Please tell me what you think???

Now on to the year ahead, and I have a very busy year coming up. First off the Taxi Rank is a handmade only market which is this Friday Evening the 20th February in King George Square in the centre of Brisbane right next to City Hall.

So lots of work to do, I need to check my stock and replenish where necessary, and try to cut down on some of the stuff I take with me, I tend to get a bit carried away, and think oh! I might need that or this and I really don’t..

My lovely Daughter Laura of http://www.etsy.com/shop/marludesignz

is having a major operation in March, and I will be helping out as much as possible, so this will be an intense time for us all…..

The other thing I am doing is an online course to help me market my business, and to what direction I am taking it, so I signed up with http://www.flourishthriveacademy.com and the lovely ladies Tracy Willard Matthews & Robin Kramer, who run it are awesome, they relate specifically to the jewellery business and I have been given some invaluable information on how to run and present my business, so here is to the future cheers, until next time….cheers_560

Almost There!

Well we are all packed and ready to go, last-minute farewells to the fur babies, sad to say good-bye after 5 months of them constantly being by your side. So off we go at 5 am, it’s dark and very cold, but at least it’s not raining. Keeping in mind we are supposed to be taking 2 leisurely weeks to get home, when Boy Wonder get’s behind the wheel of the car he turns into some sort of maniac and just keeps driving, so we managed to clock up 600 odd km’s and ended up in a small seaside village called Eden on the South Coast of NSW. On the way we did have some stops and I managed to get a couple of photo’s:

We set up camp and went to bed quite early, but woke up in the middle of the night absolutely freezing, the temp has dropped to -2c and no amount of heat out of our little heater can counteract it. So I made hot drinks and we sat it out until about 4.30am and started packing up. In the meantime we had looked at the map and decided to stop off in Canberra the next night and catch up with some Family. So once again we where on the road very early and headed towards Canberra, this time we managed to clock up 265 klm’s, an improvement on the previous day.

Stopped for Breakfast

We decided however to spend the night in a Motel rather than another night in cold conditions. I was so very glad we did as it dropped to -5c the next morning burrrrrrrr. We are now on day 3 and almost halfway home, so much for the leisurely drive!!! so I put my foot down and insisted we stay somewhere for a couple of days, as by this time I am suffering from Craft Withdrawal Symptoms and I really need to get my hands on some wire and tools. So after map reading we have decided on a little Village by the sea, one shop which sells everything including fuel and nothing else in sight, except the caravan park. We are parked right next to the beach, awesome!

The bird life is amazing they are very tame and will come right up to you and eat out of your hand

Finally managed to find my little bag with wire, beads & tools and sat and played for a couple of hours, it was lovely just sitting there listening to the ocean and the birds flitting around in the trees. I managed to make a couple of pieces but couldn’t finish them as they need to be work hardened,

But I have satisfied my need to do a little wire bending, I like brooches and stick pins, they can be worn in so many different ways, Stick Pins can be pushed into a hair bun or used to hold your clothes together i.e. shawls, sarongs or could  be pinned on to a hat or even on your belt, if you have any more idea’s I would love to hear them, just share them with us here. So we will be packing up again in the morning and heading for home, looking forward to that, but not unpacking the van and re-packing the house, so much to do will keep you posted……………..M

Work In Progress

Hi, I thought you might like a look at what I’m working on, I am hoping to do a Market, weather permitting, on 28th June, it is winter here and in Victoria, Australia and Winter is quite wet so I will keep you posted.

Here are some things I’m working on at present, let me know your thoughts on them.

I think I will have to have the seahorse finished for the market as they have proved to be very popular, usually I wire them onto a canvas that I have painted black, but because this one is in black wire that’s probably not a good idea, so I will have to come up with options.

They will all have beads and wire added much like this one,Sea Horse 1

Not sure which colours yet, I have lots to choose from, too many perhaps!!!

On a different note I am bursting with enthusiasm, I submitted some of my work to Rena Klingenberg’s “Jewellery Making Journal” and she very kindly posted them on her website for me, check it out here   http://jewelrymakingjournal.com/wired-up/

I am just so pleased with the lovely comments people have left on there, it has really spurred me ahead to write this blog, I would highly recommend Rena’s book

It has helped me to put things in perspective and made me think outside the square.

Until next time…………….M
